Mistaken Identity and Suprise Treats

Every so often I realise that TOH and I inhabit different worlds.  She is into high culture and intellectual stuff where as I am in to middle culture (for want of a term for something which is more "middle class" than Cheryl Cole but less "middle class" than classical stuff). I am an indy kid who has grown up to appreciate MOR rock, aswell punk and folkie stuff.

Anyway, sometimes, this difference in cultural interests and literacy can lead to interesting situations. Take for example the other night when I went to see Hooky. I was trying to explain via Joy Division, New Order, and then The Happy Mondays and so forth.  In the end we managed to connect over the fact, "Tony Wilson was the bloke off North West Tonight".  Despite being a Lancashire lass Factory, and the Hacienda meant nothing. Where as to me without the Manchester of the 80's and 90's my youth several hundred miles away in Tractor Land would have been very different. What was going on in Manchester at that time impacted us, giving us key cultural icons in the same way as Liverpool had to the previous generation.

Next week she is in, I hope, for a suprise treat. She got us tickets to go and see Joan Armatrading, because she knows I really rate her. At the time, knowing some of the issues TOH has in relation to her synaesthesia, I was a bit wary because  Joan Armatrading really rocks. TOH however assured me that she knew who Joan Armatrading was and was really excited about seeing her. Well, it turns out that somehow Joan Armatrading had been mistaken for Joan Armitage, who in turn had been mistaken for Simon Armitage, the poet. Therefore, TOH had thought she had bought tickets for a very expensive poetry reading. I think she is going to get a real treat on Thursday, if her head can cope with the colours I suspect Armatrading will unleash.

Oh, and incase TOH happens to read this or anybody else reading happens to think Joan Armatrading is somebody different here is a You Tube clip of what to expect:
