My inbox today told me that Supergrass have split up after 17 years. It also had a strange message from Premier saying "Ignite: The Nuns of Notting Hill". The latter was amusing and only mildly interesting the former flooded me with a strange sense of nostalgia.
I remember sitting in my student room in the autumn of 1994, when Britpop was in full swing and Steve and Jo were on the radio each evening, listening to the new music coming out. The hype was all around Oasis, but my favourite tune was "Caught By The Fuzz". It was just good fun. I remember the pleasure I got hearing "I Should Coco" for the first time and the sheer energy it emitted.
In my mind none of their later stuff caught this early energy and their first single remains their best. It had a cheeky charm which Blur didn't even manage with Parklife. Live they were also quite a good band, who managed to make a festival crowd jump up and down in happy unison singing, " But we are young, we run green, Keep our teeth, nice and clean, See our friends, see the sights, feel alright".
So it's R.I.P. Supergrass. I leave you with Caught By The Fuzz, in loving memory.
