So it's that time of year when people start planning the summer and stuff. Here are some ideas of things you might want to consider, which may be a bit easier than Glastonbury, (which has some resale tickets going on sale this weekend), to get hold of tickets for:
Festivals:
Cambridge Folk Festival (29th July - 1ST August) has announced it's line up and it looks to be quite a good one. Having seen Seth Lakeman and Show of Hands this year I can thoroughly recommend them. Tickets for this one go on sale 16th May.
Hop Farm Festival (3rd July) looks to have some great OAP's headling (Bob Dylan and Ray Davies are number 1 and two on the bill)
Latitude Festival (15th-18th July) looks to have a fun lineup including Emo Philips on the comedy stage.
Cropredy (12th-14th August) has some of this blogs favourite peeps on: Keith Donnelly & Flossie Malavialle, Martyn Joseph and Fairport Convention.
Guilfest (16th-18th July) carries on it's reputation as one of the more eclectic festivals. Orbital, N-Dubz, Hawkwind and The Human League are amongst the unlikely bed fellows.
Beautiful Days (20th-21st August) mixes Crustie Leftiness with Folk and 80's nostalgia. This is the Levellers festival afterall. They're joined by Billy Bragg, Fairport, James and Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
Finally, but not least, Greenbelt (27th-30th August). Music not announced yet, but a varied kick ass bunch of speakers. Let's hope Clare Short doesn't get her pashmina muddy ;)
Conferences
Marxism 2010 (1-5th July) looks to have an interesting lefty lineup.
Changing for Good(12th-16th July) is the Wesley Study Centre's Summer School and has a varied and interesting lineup. The line up includes Steve Chalke, Rt. Rev. John Pritchard, who people will have heard of and some people who are possibly lesser known but I know are immense speakers and really worth hearing. OK, so perhaps I go overboard on this because alot of people involved I know to some extent, and they've really helped me and loads of my friends, but heck, this thing is the real deal. It is really worth exploring if you are interested in exploring in more depth how you turn your faith into something more than excuse to sit on your ass on a Sunday morning waving your hands in the air or whatever. This is not a retro fest, it's a relevant week led by real, getting their hands dirty, practioners, (with a few of the coolest academics I know).
Detling (7th-12th August) is a good, retro, mainstream, evo conference with RT Kendall and Graham Kendrick on the bill.
I could go on, but I won't. I am planning, inbetween writing up and job hunting to make atleast two of the above and very possibly a third. I leave it up to you to guess which ones.
