Ok, I admit it whilst I had mild sympathy for my students trying to juggle work and full time at college I never quite went beyond you're on a course, you're expected to be here to study mentality that a teacher needs.
Suddenly I feel an awful lot of empathy for the people I sat down and had a "chat" with, (although I wouldn't have done much of it any differently). I have an interview next week for a proper part time job, but it clashes with a college induction thing at uni. I've done the phoning the interview thing to see if they can change it and so instead I'm going to have to try and blag my way around the uni thing, (which don't worry isn't departmental). This is not ideal by any stretch of the imagination, particularly as I work by a specific moral code which will require me to be basically honest (rather than pulling a sickie which would avoid the explanation - cause I just couldn't do it).
As for the job, it involves travelling and going back to something I hoped I had left a few years in the past. However, it would be paid employment within teaching rather than retail and that is the important thing.... so on I'm going to the interviewing and hoping I get it and that the job will work out around when I need to be in uni.
So following on from the last entry I guess I'm going to give some good advice to students doing the job hunting thing, which I will try to keep to:
1) Limit the number of hours you work during term time, whilst the money would be useful if you do too much it will effect your work. Aim to do no more than 10, realistically don't do more than about 18 including weekends.
2) Do not do a late night shift the night before you have a 9:00am lecture. Five hours sleep before a "thrilling" piece of theory is not a mix which will work. You will either end up wrecked, asleep in the lecture or not making the lecture at all - none of these are appropriate.
3) Remember that lots of people will be looking for work and so if you work for somewhere that transfers staff, like some of the supermarkets do go for that. Equally start looking asap.
4) Think about the travel, if you don't drive can you do it by public transport and how much of your wages will that eat up?
5) Go into places and ask if they have jobs. If you see a sign up go and respond when you see it. It may be gone by the time you get back.
