It's Education Sunday

So today is Education Sunday. I know this is one of those Sundays there are differing views on. Some see it as singleing out a specific group when we don't do the same for people in other careers whilst others appreciate it. My own view is it is useful if we look at education in the widest sense as a life long activity.

The effect of education cannot be under-estimated, and neither can the impact of a good teacher. This was bought home to me today. I recieved a Facebook message from a former student inviting me to join a Facebook group in support of a former colleague who has apparently left his post. Not knowing the details of the situation, and being aware of the fence a professional walks on these occassions I have not joined the group, but I do support the underlying sentiment of those who have started the group.

Having explored the wall of the group I was particularly struck by some of the messages being posted, by a range of former students. They were not, on the whole, negative messages about the situation these were a bunch of people ready to stand up and say that my former colleague had had a really positive impact on their lives. It was very humbling to read these and realise that a good teacher really does have a long term impact and really can change lives. Those of us who are teachers need to understand exactly the influence we can have and the priviledge and responsibility it means we have.
