When's the academy not the academy?

The answer is when it's a new live venue which is wanting to use an arguably established name. The Northern Echo has an article which explains how the "Durham Academy", due to open this week where Walkabout used to be is having its name challenged by the group who own the O2 Academies, including the one in Newcastle.

Whatever it's called will be interesting to see what it's like. Whilst the Gala has some good folkie stuff and comedy on and the Angel is a good rock pub there is a need for a decent indy venue here similar to places like Inside Out in Darlington, Roadmender in Northampton and Junction in Cambridge.

Mind you perhaps the venue should actually try being a venue with no name rather than having one similar to another well known brand. Ben Edson picks up on this theme, in relation to the emerging church, from a Naomi Klein article in the Guardian.* Note here that I know he doesn't really pick up on that theme. Both the Edson and Klein posts/ articles are more complex and interesting but, hey, by using a tenuous link to non-branding I managed to get in a link to something I think's worth reading.
