I was engaging in a bit Saturday afternoon procrastination in the local record shop yesterday (i.e. browsing with little idea of buying) when I noticed I was having to consciously stop myself from bouncing around to the background tune, whose lyrics were also making me giggle. So it was I did that very rare thing of enquiring who they were playing (from the female mockney vocals I thought it might be Kate Nash) and found out it was Remi Nicole's album My Conscience and I. So it was I bought the album on the strength of Tabloid Queen.
It's not musically the best record ever, (although it is well produced and at the top end of the genre), but it is fun and the lyrics are the sort of thing I actually want my daughter to be exposed to. There's loads about girls respecting themselves, being who they are and not letting the media, peer pressure or blokes who want to exploit them ruin their lives.
Besides Tabloid Queen I really liked Rock N Roll, New Old Days (full of nostalgia and cultural references from mid /late 80's) and Go Mr Sunshine.
So if you want to have some intelligent bubble gum pop to sing along to through 2008 you could do much worse than putting Remi Nicole on your playlist this year.
