I have a thing about pottering about in church kitchens, particularly with being able to stand by the sink.
My love of pottering about in church kitchens dates back to the late 90's when I was having my falling apart period. Whilst I wasn't, mentally, in a state to do much useful I was able to pop down the church each week to help with the old people's lunch club. It was a wonderful time when a group of people who had seen enough of life to understand what was going on with me just taught me what you did with different veggies and let me lay tables and dry up. It meant during a period when I wasn't working and was failing miserably to get to grips with being a playground mum I could do something useful. More than that though I got to know people, there is something special about the superficial yet deep conversation which occurs in church kitchens. It tends to be where you find out loads about what's really going on in people's lives as they talk about their children, grandchildren, ailments and allotments.
Anyway as time moved on and I got sane and built a career opportunities to potter in the chuch kitchen declined, (particularly as I would be a suitable contender for "Can't Cook - Won't Cook") but now I do get to potter on a monthly basis. The age group of the people I am pottering with means that it's more shift patterns, hairdressers, Facebook and trashy tv we talk about but it's still fun and giving me a chance to get to know these people better.
So todays lesson, if you have the chance, go for a potter in your church kitchen - it's fun.
