"Well-Meaning Guardian Readers Against the Bomb" reads the retro CND badge I picked up today, and it pretty much sums up much of today's bank holiday fun.
Along with several thousand other people Third Party and myself headed off to CND's Aldermaston Easter demo. I stepped off the mini-bus and bumped into Sophs , in one of those I had no idea I was going to see you today but I'm so glad to catch up with you loud screechy moments.
We spent the rest of the afternoon, standing in the occassional snowshower, making a human chain around the nuclear research establishment and standing listening to inspiring speeches from people who were touring around on the back of a lorry. The speakers included a Hiroshima survivor and Vivienne Westwood, (yup the fashion designer), amongst others.
Was this wet liberal retro activism or a meaningful action? Upon reflection probably a bit of both. I'm glad I went though, as humans and Christians I don't think we can stand silent as our leaders spend money on the development of the next generation of weapons of mass destruction. Whilst actions like this may seem ineffective and out of date they act as a reminder to the powers that be that they will be held accountable and that people still care.
