The Gum Tree by Douglas Coupland is in some ways Coupland lite in terms of being a more easy read than some of his books. It's got the same gritty realism of messed up characters, and breaks a range of taboos (it does death, cancer and dog excrement at various points), but it's somehow all less intense than in some other of his books. In turn it's probably not the greatest of his books but it's still an excellent ironic read which is full of humour amid the dark stuff. So yup, another recommendation for you to get out and read some Coupland if you haven't.
