Architecture and old age

This week is the week of prayer for Christian Unity, an annual event put together by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. I have to admit I have a rather soft spot for this annual event for all sorts of reasons, some good ecumenical ones and others for rather more sentimental nostalgic reasons. Anyway, last night I went and celebrated it at a service in the chapels of one of the rather more distinguished colleges.

The service itself was quite good, but not what really grabbed my attention. Have to say I was slightly distracted from worship by the surroundings. The building itself was quite beautiful in a way only wood and stone can be and there were some gorgeous portraits on the walls.

The other thing that was distracting my attention was realising how young one member of the clergy there was - unfortunately the one involved in the service. As I put it to somebody afterwards I'm must be getting old because whilst I'm used to the police looking young, I'm not used to the clergy looking decidedly young. Or rather I'm not used to the clergy looking young in relation to me. I have in my time encountered clergy who were in their twenties but these were when I was of a similar age. Now, they just make me feel ancient.
