Learning the language

Over the last couple of months I've been discovering about anthropology and about the importance of learning the languages and symbols of people and groups.

The importance of this is learning the language is becoming increasingly apparent in Durham. There is occassional talk, in various spaces, about "the stash". I am having to learn that around here the term relates to items of clothing - particularly hoodies - rather than anything else, which I might have heard the term used in reference to in the past.

This is particularly important if you don't want a bit of a headf**k after Methsoc early morning communion when you catch the tail end of a conversation which included the line "we ease the freshers in before we tell them about the stash". I knew that it couldn't mean what my previous knowledge of language was telling it meant, but until it was explained I was somewhat perturbed and confused to say the least.
