The final benefit of blogging and reading blogs I want to highlight is the general educational and activist type use.
On a big scale we all know that Obama's campaign team used social networking, blogging sites, etc very effectively in the last election. However, they are also v. useful for sharing information about actions and campaigns on a much smaller scale aswell.
Blogging has given me a chance to share information with others about social movement and charity stuff I care about, but it has also given me the opportunity to hear about other, often about smaller scale, charities others have been involved in aswell.
Linked to this is the general ability of blogs to raise conciousness about various issues through people sharing their personal experiences.
Again, whilst this type of stuff may be quite thinly spread amongst the fluff it shows the positive side of blogging.
So all in all has to be said, whilst blogging can be, (and for me probably is quite often), a self indulgent activity there is much more to it than that. Over the last four years discovering about blogging and more importantly reading the blogs of others has enriched my life greatly.
