Today at work I got asked twice what an evangelical was (same lesson repeated with different groups, both of which came up with the question). I gave a standard bland answer,which is what the students expect and what is required (this year no other members of staff have dropped me in it with my students & so I am managing my sitting on the fence teacher with no specific beliefs bit) but then started to think what did I actually mean by the term evangelical?
In alot of ways the term evangelical has been central to what I've been trying to redefine myself as not being, but I'm not entirely sure what I personally mean by the term. I think it's one of those convienient labels I have given my own interpretation to. If I have rejected the straight forward definition I gave my students today then I have rejected some very major bits of my faith or serverely reinterpreted it to such an extent even I can no longer recognise what I believe. This all getting so complicated, kind of wishing I could go back and just put the lid back on the box I opened.
