Labels and labelling

Surf in the park has posted a really interesting blog about labels. Really must learn to do links (will add to list soon).

It reminded me of an article I wrote for a single parent newsletter last year which said we need to drop the label but keep the identity. By this I mean that we take on a variety of labels (some positive, some negative) and we can spend so much time trying to live up to the label or prove it doesn't fit us that we end up being miserable and trapped. I think we are called to live in freedom with the whole of our identities, this means just being us as we are, acknoweledging all the different parts of our lives and how those parts of our identity will have an impact on our decisions in life but not trying to be something we're not just to proof that we do / don't fit the stereotype.

All that said I know I am making progress on this but still live and make decisions according to the labels I attach to myself or others attach to me rather than just being me, quite alot. Beginning to think that one area I need to work on is that if I take seriously the idea that there is no "secular" / "religious" divide and that being a "Christian" isn't just a label we can attach & take as something positive or negative according to who we're with , but part of our identity which we are meant to just live.
