Well, the Brit award nominations are out ( http://www.nme.com/news/111022.htm ). Although over the last few years they have become a bit of a joke as the key "mainstream" awards they do give a good idea of the state of music. This year's nominations show that with a combination of old groups and artists back to form and new names having emerged we have seen a renaissance in music (particularly British music) over the last year or so.
From the nominations for this year's Brit Awards my personal choices would be:
BRITISH MALE SOLO ARTIST
Lemar
BRITISH FEMALE SOLO ARTIST
PJ Harvey
BRITISH GROUP
Franz Ferdinand
MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM
The Streets - 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'
BRITISH SINGLE
Shapeshifters - 'Lola's Theme'
BRITISH BREAKTHROUGH ACT
Franz Ferdinand
BRITISH URBAN ACT
The Streets
BRITISH ROCK ACT
Muse
BRITISH LIVE ACT
Franz Ferdinand
BRITs25 : THE BEST SONG AWARD
Joy Division - 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
POP ACT
Avril Lavigne
INTERNATIONAL MALE SOLO ARTIST
Eminem
INTERNATIONAL FEMALE SOLO ARTIST
Kelis
INTERNATIONAL GROUP
Green Day
INTERNATIONAL ALBUM
U2 - 'How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'
INTERNATIONAL BREAKTHROUGH ACT
Killers
Well, we'll just have to wait until February 9th to see how I match up to the real awards.
