Back in 1999 the cause was Drop the Debt, and I made my first 1 day trip to Edinburgh. As part of my research for a disertation (that never got written) I went up to engage in a spot of participant observation, the event the Scottish human chain to mark the Cologne Summit. I then travelled back overnight to London to take part in their chain the next day & then later in the month went to Cologne.
Over the last six years there has been a lot said, but as Jubilee Debt Campaign points out
"Sadly, at the end of the Jubilee 2000 campaign in December 2000, it was clear that policies on debt cancellation weren't matching the rhetoric."
Having said that it is clear that progress has been made and the movement has broadened to take in the whole package relating to trade rules, debt relief and aid through first Trade Justice Campaign and most recently and obviously through Make Poverty History campaign.
So today I finally got my tickets sorted to go up to Edinburgh for a day again. So if anybody is on the overnight coach from Victoria on the Friday night or coach back to Victoria on the Saturday night overnighter and spots two (likely to be) rather loud women, with embarrassed looking tweenager, come and say Hi!
