28 days to go.
So in mid-September 2000 it was finally off to uni (again), this time for a year, where I would discover whether I was cut out for a career in teaching or whether I had made a major mistake.
Well, pretty near the beginning of the course we were told it would test us and you can't take any short cuts on a PGCE, how true I was to discover that was.
The lectures and assignments were quite hard work, but the social side of it was fun, not that we had the time to do too much of the social side. The group of people in our cohort were really cool.
Placement was in an institution in a more economically deprived area than I was used to & particularly as my bus journey took me through areas I wasn't acustomed to I realised what a sheltered life I had led up to that point. However the students were ok and the staff were really, really supportive.
However, it isn't easy to walk into a classroom and during the first term it seemed like maybe this wasn't for me - I seemed to be just not cut out for it, but I was determined and by the beginning of the next term I had decided this course was not going to beat me - I wanted to be a teacher.
During the next term I listened to all the advice I could get and acted on it. In time I got the hang of how not to be too soft but not be Hitler at the same time, and through hard work, sheer determination and loads of support I got it together and passed the course.
Now all I had to do was find a job.....................
