Another aspect - another part of the movement

Q. What is the difference between a Christian (or religious) contribution to a social movement like Make Poverty History and a general contribution from socialists or anarchists? Is there any?

A. As I see it there is not alot of difference EXCEPT the Christian / religous contribution will also include prayer as an element and may include a prophetic aspect. As such we will be joining with others from a variety in the same actions, but on the basis of including prayer and prayerful consideration of our actions (and where we draw the lines as to what is legitimate).

This idea is one which is becoming more popular, particularly as activism is again in vouge amongst the Christian community, again. Although I had seen it fully explained in Gods Politics by Jim Wallis I was not aware that it had taken on an organised form in the anti-global poverty social movement. However through my reading of the Baptist Times (now on line) and this weeks update from the BMS I have become aware of The Micah Challenge .

The Micah Challenge is an global ecumenical initiative and in addition to encouraging people to go and demonstrate it is calling for UK churches to treat Sunday 3rd July as a national day of prayer about the G8. It has some resources to download to help focus corporate prayer and also has a petition to sign (which can be done as an individual, family, church, organisation, etc).
