I am a grown up member of the middle class and make no bones about it. It doesn't make me better or worse than anybody else, it's just part of who I am. As such there are things I enjoy doing, which are not exclusively middle class (& should certainly not be viewed as such), but tend by their nature (& cost) to be activities enjoyed by that a disproportionate number of people from that group.

All this said, I am a skint member of the middle classes and so what follows is how to do adventures on a shoestring, but with some luxury, when you are no longer a student (or if you are, but some discounts differ).

1. If you live in the South East of Britain use a Network Rail Card to buy a one day travel card to London (includes tube)

2. Once you have arrived in London take tube to St. Pauls and enjoy the view of the Thames as you make your way across the Millenium Bridge to Bankside.

3. Use a Tate Membership (which makes a handy Christmas or Birthday request if you're stuck about what to ask close relatives for) to go and sun bathe on the roof of the Tate Modern & read a book, whilst having a drink and a sit down after your journey in the heat. Oh - you could also use the membership card to get into any of the current exhibitions whilst you're in there or just get lost in the vastness.

4. Pop next door to the The Globe Theatre and buy a £5 groundling ticket (be aware you would have to stand throughout) or indulge yourself in a restricted view ticket at a v.reasonable price (with a v.good view, despite it being labelled restricted view), and see wonderful, wonderful acting - as Shakespeare intended. In this case the play was Pericles .

It's a comedy with a strong, slightly complicated, but extremely powerful plot.

5. Find somewhere cheap to get a bite on the way home, so as to avoid the rush hour on the tube, after the matinee performance.
