PC Nonsense

I like to read Tom Paine, it provides a particular view on US politics, which shows that there is truly a plurality of opinion in the US. To be honest I normally agree with the articles on there, which tend to come from a basically leftish position.

Today, however, this has wound me up, not because it praises Bush, but rather it seems he is being praised for doing the right thing, when I would argue it could be the very worst thing. What is it this time? The offending article is based around a recent appointment to the Supreme Court being a case of affirmative action enusring there is parity between men and women.

Now the idea of any women (or ethnicity / sexuality/ disability) being chosen over men ( or white / straight/able-bodied person ) to even up the equality statistics and show parity, rather than being the best person for the job is one I personally find offensive. To me it says that women can't get jobs on their own merit, but rather only as a gift of men who want to appear to be doing the right thing.

Now I hope that Bush did make the appointment on the basis of the right person for the job, and on that basis I think it's cool, but do we really need to celebrate these appointments on the basis of PC nonsense? I would argue no & say that in this case Tom Paine has taken a step to the left too far.
