The Inner Child is a theme of a quiz on Sofia's wiblog and Hannah has a similar theme in an excellent two part posting on her blog which is focusing on Childlike freedom and how we need to (i) reconnect with a sense of childlike freedom within ourselves - specifically in the context of worship & (ii) how we need to allow our children that sense of freedom within churches.
Alot of this has to do with perceptions of correct behaviour and self-confidence (both as an individual and in the context of being a parent) but it is an interesting area to explore. My own contribution to the debate would be that in the past churches were actually good at getting people to discover the child within and encourage play (through cheesy ice-breakers, socials, etc) and whilst I am one of those people who is quite glad now I don't have to go through the ordeal of such things I think that they were a way of getting play and laughter into our worshipping communities.
Perhaps we should all stop trying to be so sophisticated in making our activities relevant and move back to this subversive type of activity which was a laugh. Help - I think I have just put forward a reasonable argument for the return of the barn dance, the games evening, and the cheesy ice-breaker game.
