It's interesting doing types of religious organisation with a predomiently group of secular group of students, they haven't really got a clue about the things that most of us floating around here take as being everyday language. As such I often use analogies with shopping to try and give them the feel of things.
So today it was that denominations became labels. You have a range of different brands to choose from, but you choose the one that you prefer.
This got taken to a bit further later on when I was explaining those groups which felt that they had a monopoly on religious truth (read fundamentalists) compared to those who don't (read ecumenical "liberal" perspectives). Top Shop, M&S, Asda etc all sell t-shirts and they know that the t-shirts they sell are similar to those in other shops. However, Nike are selling you something more, because in selling you the t-shirt they are selling you the brand, the aspect of your identity, the unique Nike t-shirt.
Anyway this has got me thinking what label would you say yours is?
I'll start of with the Baptists - I'd guess we're a bit like M&S - recognisable high street brand, basically affordable, has a bit of something for everybody whilst retaining key characteristics of brand.
Now over you to complete the list.
