Mike Gayle is probably my favourite contempory author (slightly ahead of Joanna Trollope) and his latest book Brand New Friend is yet again a winner.

It's an easy to read, yet not dumbed down novel full of cultural references which you can take or leave as you wish (personally I decide to take them, particularly when he wanders down memory lane regarding 80's indie music). As usual it is dealing with human relationship, but from the male perspective and with such a good story line that you can't fail to be drawn in.

I just wish that they would start making his novels into films or tv adaptations, because they would work (in a similar way to Nick Hornby's books - but in a way which would enable the makers to be more faithful to the original story).

V.glad I have a lovely housegroup leader who having bought it, (she discovered Mike Gayle from sitting next to my fiction bookcase on a regular basis) lent it to me so that I have been able to read it sooner than later.
