The great leap forwards

Way back when this wiblog was a mere sprog (i.e. last May) I made this entry which was a review of Gods Politics (Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get it) by Jim Wallis. (Note whilst revisiting the link just given I have come across a typo in my original entry, it should read it goes beyond the traditional splits between Religious and Secular left, - not right as printed in entry).

Well it appears that the book is now due for release in bookshops over here and as part of the promotion for it the LICC is hosting an evening with Jim Wallis where, according to the blurb, "the themes of the book will be outlined and the global implications of American Politics" discussed.

Have to say that if you are vaugely interested in international politics &/ or the way faith can actually get beyond the Christian/secular divide to make a difference this one is worth exploring. I think its release is particularly timely in light of the hardening of secular fundamentalism on the left, and the corresponding defensive response of evangelicals, which appears to be occuring in this country. In my humble opinion this is largely as fuelled by both sides taking on board media representations of the situation, fed by what is percieved and promoted by those who have an agenda to fulfil, to be the full picture of happening on the other side of the Atlantic. Hopefully this will enlighten a few people about the diversity within the American situation and remind them that both left wing politics and evangelicalism in the UK have a seperate history and interpretation. In the end anything which seeks to bridge the gulf of understanding, which appears to be deepening, is to be welcomed.

(N.B. It was another trip to a site, in this case Mark Greer, originally found by playing link the link that alerted me to this one. So (i) acknowledgement to him for posting details & (ii) playing link the link can sometimes pay dividends in the information it yields, although it can also mean that you find so many good sites you have far too many bloggs saved to favourites.)
