Celebrating the centenary

Well, it appears that Labour has been celebrating their centenary, and it is clear that the official version is trying to play down the role of socialism and split this from trade unionism in a way which is far more simplistic than was probably the case. (What they appear to be doing is confusing Marxism with socialism because it further confuses the meaning of the term socialism and enables New Labour to further distance itself from that term IMHO).

The theme continues, but in a more positive way with this site which Tony Robinson is promoting. It is seeking to collect the social history of the Labour Party & it's branches. Should be a v.interesting collection when it is concluded.

The Guardian also celebrates the anniversary with some archieve material and a podcast.

So to conclude Happy b'day to Labour, because whilst some elements of New Labour may have betrayed the roots of the party, (with both socialists and trade unionists being marginalised over the later part of the century), it was the party which gave us the NHS, the Comprehensive education system and other such important parts of our society. We have alot to be greatful to them for.
