There is a fairly common tension at the House of Chops. The tension between those in Administration and those who deal with things on the day. Often we stand on the day with a myriad of adventures (problems) caused by a lack of foresight. Problems such as moving the equipment they need to build stands through several hundred punters going to the Church that meet in our building. It makes us scratch our scalps and ask questions like how did someone give permission for this to happen when this Church meets here every week and at the same time every week!!!
Had a case like this recently. We had dinner for 600 in the nice room. That was not a hassle at all the room fits 1000 ok. But 20 - 30 of the tables at the back were sitting on stages at the rear of the room. These stages were hard up against the servery partitions for the most part blocking the ability to serve food and beverage to the room. They had built them in the wrong place and were mostly done by 7 am which is when they were supposed to have started. So it was too late to move them. The movement had a flow on affect because the main floor was also out of alignment so instead of tables in line looking beautiful it looked like the proverbial dog's breakfast. the client was like ah just move it. But had no concept of the massive flow on affect he was creating because it just caused more and more to be out of alignment which was a bit of a hassle really. But one advantage is with early bump in is I get to leave with 2-3 hours before the event starts. I know this may sound wrong and irresponsible but once I leave it is someone else's problem. But in the end it was ok. the dinner finished at 1 am and then had to move all the staging and baby grand piano and all the tables and then put the 100 seats in for Church with a different stage all by 6. It was a close call but they got it done. Superb effort by the fairies that make magic like that. Don't tell them I called them fairies as they are all much tougher than me and would thump me for that sort of talk.
