For your words of support (or lack of them).
History by definition is recycled; not only in the past but in the future. As humans (I don't know about the rest of you species) we are condemned to repeat the mistakes that we, and others, have made since time immemorial. So if I recycle my History Today bits then all I can say is......
TOUGH LUC K YOU UNGRATEFUL UNTERMENSCHEN!!!!!
If you think you can do better then you go out and do something historical that'll be worth me writing about in 10 years or so. Plus, knowing how bad some people are at history my writings will be a source of knowledge that, no matter how often you read them, will always seem new :-)
Today in History:
1865: Thomas Sutherland establishes the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. This week they announced a rights issue of £12bn and are about the most solid of the banks in the current crisis.
1918: Russia signs the Treaty of Brest Litovsk. This ends their participation in the Great War. It also leads to the independence of the Baltic States, Finland, Ukraine and Poland. With the exception of Finland, they all decide to come back to Russian (Soviet) rule after the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
1931: The Star Spangled Banner becomes the official national anthem of the USA. Personally I prefer Big Home Alabama or the Theme From Rawhide.
1945: The Finns declare war on their former allies Germany. They accuse the Italians of changing sides all the time!!
1985: The National Union of Mineworkers national executive decide, on behalf of their members, to call off their year long strike. And so the coal industry in much of the UK died.
