Is The Bible True?

While buttering my Geobar this morning, I appreciate extra cholesterol on my energy bars, I almost choked to death on an article in The Times. You see, I have difficultly reading and sometimes pages get stuck in my mouth.

The Roman Catholics have now decided that some of the things in the bible are NOT true. Had they found out about my writing in extra bits and adding new books? Thankfully not. They had decided that it was time to tell its followers that: "We should not expect to find Scripture in full scientic accuracy or complete historical precision".

Now I for one accept that the world may not have been created in six literal days. I can accept that Revelation is not a clear guide to the end of the world. I can even accept that evolution may have played some part in species development, though still do not accept the man from apes thing.

Is this really such a surprise to us? There has always been some difference between the bible's portrayal of the Israel and archaelogical discoveries and the difficulty of fitting some biblical events with historical record. We are even told that a thousand years is as a day and a day as a thousand years to God.

Nothing they say can dent my faith in God and the existence of His Son, our Saviour. Neither do I see a real attack on the rest of the church's beliefs. Yes, there are a lot of people who believe that everything laid down in scripture happened exactly as described and at the time described. To me Genesis is the written form of a people's oral history, not 100% accurate but definitely true.

God made the world. God chose His people. God came to earth. He died to save ALL people. God WILL return again. Anything else is just a side issue and cannot alter these basic facts. Would a creation that took more than 6 days prove that God is not the ultimate power. Some of us couldn't build an Ikea bookcase in 6 days (I can but it doesn't mean I'm God).
