Food

The Supreme Leader has today decreed that we all have to throw out less food in our dustbins. It is reckoned that each family throws out £400 worth of food waste every year. I know that we don't so it must be the rest of you...

By leading this campaign he wants to highlight that we can all do our bit to help the food crisis, not just leave it to the G8 and government. His aim is to increase supply but reduce consupmtion. Hopefully this will help in lowering the cost of food. What he seems to forget it is that the main pressures on food prices are bad harvests, droughts, the pursuit of biofuels and less land given over to agriculture.

It may also help if he looked at his own aid spending. Less money is being spent on agriculture projects in the third world, especially Africa than ever before. More aid is being pumped into building up industries and then privatising them, or "advising" on the privatisation of existing utilities - that shouldn't be privatised - than going into agriculture.

In addition we are doing everything possible to raise obstacles to Africans actually trading with us. Yet we still want to buy vegetables etc that would be better served feeding the local populations in Africa itself. According to the supermarkets we insist on buying out of season fruit and veg and they therefore purchase these goods from Third World countries to satisfy our needs.

Whatever happened to eating seasonal veg? Do we really want food flown halfway around the world?

History Today:

54BC : Julius Caesar invades Britain for a second time. He doesn't stay long and retreats bnack to Gaul. This leaves Britain free for another 100 years before Claudius brings his elephants over and pretends that he's brought us the circus.

1307 : Death of Edward I, the Hammer of The Scots. Also the betrayer of the Welsh Prince Llewellyn. Helped make Britain what it is today.

1854 : Death of George Ohm, who formulated Ohm's Law; he also founded Buddhism's most popular chant.

1860 : Gustav Mahler, composer of the world's most joyous music and light hearted music, is born.

1930 : Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died. The last of the Conan line died with him. He could trace his descent all the way back to Conan the Barbarian.

1937 : The Peel Commision recommends partitioning Palestine between the Jews and Arabs. It took a further 70 years before the Israelis succeeded with their wall.

1990 : Martina Navratilova wins a record 9th Wimbledon women's singles final.

2005 : Four Islamic suicide attacks kill 52 commuters and injure 700 more. Please remember that, like Christianity, Islam is essentially a peaceful religion. You get fanatical idiots in all religions.
