its just a silly phase I'm going through
Just to dispell those who doubt my sanity.....
To me St Valantine's Day has become an excuse to plug things that you don't really want to buy. The endless CD's such as: Simon Bates' Our Tune; The Greatest Love Album In The World Ever (since the one last year); or the books, cards, inflated prices for flowers or anything else.
Do you really need a day when you have to say "I love you"? Does it mean that every other day you say those words it's not valid? Does buying flowers or chocolates because someone has decreed that this is the one day in the year that your loved one needs them?
When I was younger it was a day that gave you the opportunity to express what you may otherwise never say to someone. The day when you could send the unknowing object of your inhibited devotion a card that may, or may not, break the ice.
Now its turned into a marketing scam to help fill the gap between Christmas and Easter. A reason for companies to take more money away from us to spend on things you don't want or need.
I remember the Simpsons episode where Hallmark create Love Day to fill that mid-summer gap when their profits aren't high enough. The presents are bought and are thrown into the bin the following day.
I can't understand how people say in one breath that we need to halt this consumerist exploitation of the planet. To help prevent the unnecessary exploitation of our scarce resources. Then in the next breath go out and spend money on gifts that will soon be thrown out, or left to gather dust in a dark, forboding cupboard.
It's not that I begrudge spending the money; what I begrudge is being forced to do it because the herd expect it of us. The fact that your love means less if you don't.
Isn't it better to buy something for your loved one because you want to surprise them? Shouldn't you be saying I love you throughout the year?
I know that many of the females amongst us will now accuse me of being a selfish, thoughtless and uncaring neandarthal. TOUGH!!!
I say NO!!!
I say this year and no more!!
Stop getting caught up in the marketing machine and take control of your decision making. Join me in expressing your love over the other 364 days of the year but ignore this one.
SAY IT! DON'T PAY IT!
p.s. should FW read this, which she will, I'd just like to say that I'm going to stand by my convictions from now on.
