I remember our illustrious leaders telling us how they were going to liberate the people of Iraq and save them from the cruelty of Saddam's regime. The plan was to install a democratically elected and answerable government to include all the people.
It was therefore interesting to read that the US Army have just arrested 22 Iraqi policemen while they were going about their duties. In this case their duty appears to have been to act as a Death Squad to kill a Sunni Arab. There have been unsubstantiated rumours that the Interior Ministry had been organising such squads for this purpose. Now there is proof.
The arrested men calmly told the US soldiers that they were taking the Sunni away to shoot him. The troops couldn't believe that they were so blaise about their purpose.
The Interior Ministry have promised to hold an inquiry into the matter. Anyone who's watched Yes Minister/Prime Minister or The Thick of It, or seen the current UK government in action, will know that this doesn't achieve anything. The Iraqi government are claiming that these squads are doing this without their knowledge or support.
Do they really expect us to believe that these things can be kept secret, without word getting out? Not even the Holocaust was that well organised.
Have we really seen 3000 US and British troops killed, just so the new government can behave like the old government?
