Church Anniversary Confusion

Sunday 18th sees our chapel celebrating its 50th anniversary. Well that was the idea.

Last night, just having sat down to a very nice tea of steak, sausages, chicken and salad, prepared by my Stratford housemates. We'd just begun talking about cars, Top Gear and other manly things, when the mobile rang.

"There's been a mix-up," said Pastor Chugabug.

She'd been speaking to John James, the minister of Tabernacle Penarth, over the last few days. While confirming that we had big plans for his preach at our anniversary on the 18th, he replied that he'd been booked for the 11th.

She was therefore ringing to find out what we should do. Should we switch the anniversary Sunday to the 11th to tie in with his visit, as originally planned? What about the anniversary buffet we're planning for the 16th, should that be changed?

Considering that we hadn't started advertising either event properly, what was the problem of just changing the anniversary Sunday by a week? What if people had been invited to the 18th but couldn't come?

At this point I began to lose interest in the conversation. We've been talking about this for months but in typical style nothing has been done until the last minute. Sometimes I wonder what people think happens. Do these things just organise themselves? Do they assume that one person will just drop everything and take over?

At times like this it feels good to be 100 miles away from the action during the week.

Now where is that brewery......
