1623: Anne Hathaway, a celebrated WAGP, Wife & Girlfriend of Playwrights, dies.

1806: The Holy Roman Empire is dissolved after Francis II renounces the title and becomes Emperor of Austria.

1809: Alfred Tennyson is born. He once spent a night in Caerleon and wrote a poem about it.

1881: Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin and Nobel laureate is born. I'm allergic to penicillin so's he's no use to me.

1889: The Savoy opens its doors in London.

1890: William Kemmler, a murderer becomes the first person to be executed in the electric chair.

1945: Enola Gay enters history by dropping the first Atom Bomb onto Hiroshima. Later she is immortalised by Orchestral Manouvers In The Dark (OMD).
