For Rain and Bimble...

The thing with politics is that people have this horrible ability to disreagrd everything that has gone wrong in the previous 4-5 years between votes. Others have an ability to forgive everything that party does and vote for them anyway. Others can never forgive a party for something that happened 40-50 years ago.

In the UK many people vote for the same party time after time after time. It doesn't matter how bad they are they still vote for them. Most of the country is divided into party heartlands, no matter what happens they'll always vote the same way. Labour is certain of winning the majority of South Wales and the Conservatives much of rural England.

I'm sure that it is a political truism that a monkey could indeed win several Labour or Conservative "safe" seats. It seems that the parties can take ceratin areas for granted - such as labour with Blaenau Gwent. They thought it was so safe that party headquarters could dictate that only a woman could stand and then impose their own candidate. They were then amazed when they lost the seat in the last election to Peter Law. They were equally amazed that, following his death, they lost it again to his election agent.

Politicians have a tendency to look down on the great unwashed that they represent. After a few years in politics they forget that they are there to represent the voters and not their own, or businesses, interests. Professional politicians and business lobbying are what is killing Western democracy. As time goes on the parties are becoming more and more alike and their policies almost interchangeable.
