We are lovers of Boston Legal, a great US TV series starring William Shatner & James Spader. The 3rd series started on Living in the UK last week. It is no ordinary show but a combination of legal drama and self-parody.
As an example:
2 new characters enter from the firms New York office.
"We're the new guys"
William Shatner, "You can't be or you'd have been in the season premiere!"
It is a mixture of serious law cases, with a very liberal agenda, coupled with many comedy moments. Even the characters are caricatures of stereotypical high profile, media savvy people. Yet the true mark, of any programme is its ability to grab you and suck you into its world. For us this is true "must see TV".
Where else will you find characters who go fishing by shooting salmon because they haven't caught any; where William Shatner meets a woman over the internet, who could become the 7th Mrs Denny Crane, only to find that she is a dwarf. Yet the issue was dealt with in a very tongue in cheek way that was insulting to "midgets" but had the sense of knowing to remove any unintentional insult.
People in the UK say that Americans can't do irony and humour. Watch Boston Legal and see that they're are wrong.
