Many thanks to the words of commiseration! I seem to be able to manage to survive work and not let the "man flu" win....

Scenario 1:

Today saw our Chancellor give a speech to reassure the financial markets that all would be well. It went down really well and the financial markets have been reassured and our pensions and investments are now safe. Things can't get much better than this.

Scenario 2:

Today saw our Chancellor give a speech to reassure the financial markets that all would be well. It went like a lead balloon and the markets had their biggest single day fall since the FTSE 100 came into beinng in 1984. Our pensions and investments have taken a really big hit.

Have you ever had the feeling that the "experts" don't actually know what they are doing or talking about?

History Today:

891 : Formosus becomes Pope.

1683: The first Mennonites, German Protestants, arrive in America aboard the Concord (a ship not aeroplane) in Pennsylvania.

1866: The Reno gang carries out the first robbery of a movie train in the US, making off with over $10000 from an Ohio & Mississippi train in Jackson County Indiana.

1908: Austro-Hungary annexes Bosnia & Herzegovinia - you know that they'll regret this later - as will about 20 million other Europeans.

1927: The first full length "talking" movie opens in the US - Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer.

1962: French national icon, and singer, Edith Piaf gets married.

1973: Egypt and Syria attack Israel on the holiest day of the Jewish year - Yom Kippur. Once again the Isareli's manage to recover and comprehensively defeat their Arab attackers. They seem to have learnt that open warfare won't achieve anything after this defeat.

1979: Pope John Paul II becomes the first Pope to visit the White House after meeting President Carter.

1981: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, who signed a peace treaty with Israel, is assassinated in Cairo.

2002: As part of a wider Catholic conspiracy to hide the true lineage of Jesus, the Wise Men's camels and the whereabouts of Leonardo di Caprio's sketches, Josemaria Escriva is canonised by the Vatican. Remember him? He's the guy who founded Opus Deo and is therefore responsible for Dan Brown.
