God's Voice - or, Please Can You Speak Up

I have received my first booking to preach at a church that I have no affiliation to. A friend of mine was asked but he is away that weekend and recommended that they contact me instead. Not only do I have to preach but I also have to take along my own accompanist. You see they only have 6 people attending the evening service, none of whom play a musical instrument.

Last night we went to our chapel's Monday night prayer meeting for youthwork in our valley. This is only attended by a few people from our chapel and 1 or 2 from other nearby chapels. Why is it that bible study and prayer meetings are often so poorly attended? Even ones that are held during the day for non-workers suffer the same problem.

Maybe all the other Christians do prayer and bible study at home alone - like that happens on a grand scale! Perhaps many Christians know the bible inside out, back to front and over under sideways down (sorry that last one was a Yardbirds track). I know that I don't always read my bible as much I should, or need to. Neither do I always pray as much as I should.

Thinking about it that could be why people complain that they never hear God talk to them. It's difficult to make yourself heard when no one is listening.

As we were talking last night we looked at Haggai and heard God's promise to Israel. One of the minister's there asked about how we heard God today. Do we simply rely on the Holy spirit to guide us? Why do we not hear prophets these days?

Then I thought that maybe God needs top take a more direct path. He should go back to using thunderbolts, clouds, wind and physical manifestations. Maybe, after all these years of constant talking to people unwilling to listen, His voice is going.

I've always had this vision of God having to use the biggest PA system that the universe has ever seen to get through to us.
