The Race Is Won???

As I write this Barack Obama Llama has announced his triumph in winning the Democratic nomination for President; Mrs Hilary Boo-Hiss-Clinton has yet to admit defeat.

In what has been a bitter, hard fought campaign the only real winner so far has been McCain's Oven Chips. He was lucky that he stormed to victory so early and has benefitted from the dirt, infighting of his rivals. They have dug the dirt on each other and done his smearing campaign for him.

Now come the hard work for all candidates. They have 5 months to campaign, malign, deride and insult each other. Will the inexperience of Llama outway the age of Oven Chip? Will America embrace the youth and reformist agenda of Llama or will it want the establishment feel of the Oven Chip?

The candidtates also have the problem of choosing their running mate, Vice President to us Brits. For a post that provides very little opportunity for personal power, it is still a very important decision. Do you choose someone popular with the electorate who could draw in voters that you couldn't? Do you choose a non-entity that would give you nothing? Can you work with a Vice President who will be awkward and snapping at your heels? Would you want to?

What we need to remember is that whoever is chosen will have an impact on the US' image abroad. We don't want another gung-ho idiot do we?

History Today :

1832 : THe Great Reform Act redistributes parliamenary seats and gives more representation to industrial cities. Many "Rotten Boroughs" are consigned to history. It also gives enfranchisement to the middle classes but not the common proles.

1913 : Suffargette Emily Davison dies after throwing herself in front of the King's horse at the Epsom Derby. Would you let someone vote who was silly enough to do that?

1944 : The US Fifth Army arrive in central Rome and the first Axis capital falls. The next day there is a formal procession to mark the occasion. Of course, this is slightly overshadowed by events 2 days later.

And, of course, we mustn't forget the 2nd greatest historical event. Without this this blog would not exist:

193X : Sees the entry into the world of my father.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!
