Monk Like

There seems something romantic and attractive about monastic life - from the outside.
Had I become a monk, which has always been close to my heart, would I infact think the same - or is it in fact hard work?
I suspect the latter, but is it possible, being married, having a family, to take on a monk like existance - but still giving time to work, family and community?
What is the monk like existance I am looking for?
