Surely all this fresh air is good for us?

We had a very full weekend in the garden this weekend. But first let me take you back to last Wednesday, when I spent a happy hour or two marking out the beds with canes and string. When I ran out of canes I had to find some twigs. When I'd finished their was this lethal, knee-height maze all ready to trip us up, except for the main path. We WILL walk down the path! However, as well as discovering that the garden is two feet shorter and two feet wider than I'd measured, it was all in vain.

On Saturday Mother and Stepfather appeared kitted up and ready for Hard Work. Mother and C immediately set to bringing down the dead privet and the hawthorns. As the amount of debris produced was filling the garden we decided over lunch that a bonfire was the solution. So with a bit of half-remembered Girl Guide knowledge we finally got a tiny fire going. Then the wind got up and Whoooooshhhh - all the wood and several marshmallows were consumed in a couple of hours. Great fun!

So now the back left boundary looks sadly denuded and the birds are wondering what happened to their trees. However, in order to have the fire all my string had to come out, and I'll have to do it again. If it stops raining.

I've also started the mushrooms and sown lettuce seeds (which are just starting to sprout), and ordered the seed potatoes. Apparently potatoes are good for clearing new ground and like acid soil. Should do well here then. We're getting a few of several varieties to see how they do, so we should have spuds all year. Mash, anyone?
