The story of the fence

The short version of this is that we have a new fence. Free! The long version is that next door had to put it up because they're trying to sell and viewers were complaining that they couldn't see the boundary (it was clear enough, just that the fence had a decided lean to it...). So we came back from Greenbelt to find fence posts in place, and a week later the panels followed. It's made quite a difference to the garden, makes it look more complete somehow.

Then on Saturday C decided to mutilate the privet down the other side (about the best thing to do to a privet, short of digging it up), so he cut it down to four feet high (from about ten). This had the basic effect of transferring the privet foliage from the hedge to the middle of the garden, but it does look very different. Before we felt like we were the end garden in a row of three, now we can see that we're in the middle of a row of four. Hope to post some pictures soon so you can see what I mean...

On the fruit and veg front we have had four raspberries (and I do mean four) which were very nice. This is due to the combined effects of most of the plants dying, and me missing some in my de-flowering efforts (you're supposed to do this in the first year, to help them establish). On the whole then four is good. We did however get lots of blackberries, though from my aunt's garden not ours. They made lovely fruit fool, and hopefully will make jam too.

We are winding up to the autumn push on clearing the garden properly, so that by the spring everything is as we want it to be with no grass or weeds. Hmm, I can see a lot of work coming our way. Also as we have run out of money for it I think we might take a little longer to populate it with plants. Still. at least it'll be neat and tidy if a little bare.
