We've built our first bed

A raised bed that is. In the garden. For vegetables. It looks good though, if a little new, and has survived the storms this weekend. I have also planted the first veg of the year, carrots, in a pot in the back porch. I'm desparate to grow something rather than just moving large quantities of soil around.

I have started a course in political philosophy at uni, entitled Justice and Pluralism. Very interesting, but one of those that requires intense concentration. I was never good at philosophy so I don't know what has possessed me to take it, but I'm sure it'll be good in the long run. One of those that you are glad you took *after* the fact.

We have been thinking about how we might acquire more land (and this before we even get started on our first proper season!) but have been disappointed with the lack of and price of land in the UK. We couldn't afford more than an allotment for the next twenty years. This is fine for those who wish to downshift after many years earning, but what about those of us who want to sideshift or even upshift to smallholding? There seems to be no way out except to go abroad - as far as I can tell Bulgaria is a good option, farms there are very low priced. Slight language problem though.

And I've learnt a new word today - otiose. It means (looks in dictionary) 'serving no useful purpose'. Rather like this blog then, so I will go and do something useful.
