While I don’t usually blog about what I have been doing, last week has been full of interesting things, so I thought I’d give a brief over view. Last Tuesday and Wednesday Tractor girl came to stay and we had a great time chatting, doing tourist things and a ship meet, but as Tractor Girl has blogged I won’t bother with more details.
Then this past weekend I had the sort of weekend away which would have been my dream weekend as a child, and still very enjoyable as a grown up. My god-daughter (age 11) her friend (B) and her mum (J), picked me up Friday morning for a weekend camping. We started the time away by stopping for a second breakfast(it was nearer lunch time!!), which thanks to J’s love of taking camping stove everywhere was noodles and tea on the banks of Loch Lomand. After a beautiful drive north, we stopped for a very late lunch at Neptune’s Staircase (Fort William) where there is magnificent locks. It was amusing watching a ten and eleven year old try to look in one direction at Ben Nevis which they were amazed with, at the same time as trying to watch the steam train which was the other way. This was the first time I had seen Ben Nevis (previously the top had always been covered in cloud.) We arrived that evening to the campsite just outside of Mallaig, which was just on the beach. After tea and setting up, we went for a wander by the beach, which was at the edge of the campsite.
Saturday morning, we discovered that there was more Islands to be seen from the campsite than we had thought!! Saturday morning we spent on a beach, which got bigger as the tide went out. I discovered that wet suits make such a difference!! We ate more noodles, this time the four of us sitting round the pan they had been cooked in with a fork each – it was a weekend of little washing up. In the early afternoon we headed into Mallaig for ice cream, and while wandering round the harbour we saw a seal, which was very exciting!! We then returned to the campsite to discover that the sea was a lot further away. This gave me and J a chance to chat as we wandered round the beach and god-daughter and B discovered all sorts of fun things in rock pools.
Sunday was a day of packing up quick as we saw the black clouds come towards us. The journey back was a mixture of sunshine and showers. We made several stops to enjoy the scenery.
