I was tagged on facebook the other day to write a list of 15 books you’ve read that will always stick with you. This set me thinking, so here is my list and why I’ve picked them (not sure I will manage 15 but I’ll give it a go.)
1) Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. The first “big” book I read. This was when I started entering the world of books, when I first started to understand the idea “of getting lost in a book.”
2) Killing Fields, Living Fields by Don Cormack, An amazing book about the church in Cambodia. An amazing story of faith and belief no matter what.
3) Michael and the moonshiners by Chris Wood, another book I loved as a child, it took me to another world.
4) Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin, the first time I realised that “classic” wasn’t just another word for “boring and difficult to read”
5) A New Kind of Christian by Brian Mclaren, (I read this before I knew who Brian Mclaren was) Made me realise that I wasn’t the only one asking questions, and that it was ok to ask difficult questions.
6) A Short History of Christianity by Stephen Tomkins, great for following the big picture, and understanding a small part of what shaped Christianity, also an easy read.
7) Celtic book of Daily Prayer. by Northumbria Community, (Ok so it’s not exactly the sort of book you read from cover to cover), for teaching me the value of liturgy outside of church services.
8) Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister by (Ok so I realise they are a TV series but I have read all the books) For teaching me a healthy cynicism of politics.
9) The End of The Spear, by Steve Saint. An amazing book by the son of martyred missionary Nate Saint. It shows the longer picture, and helped me think through how we make mission not about what we want, but about what the people we are seeking to reach out to need.

I think that will do for the moment, although there maybe a part two at a later point in time!!
