I know I shouldn’t moan but…..a great way to start a blog entry I know. As some of you know I have dyslexia which adds shall we just say an interesting dilemma to my studies. I have received funding for new equipment, which arrived today. A shinny new computer, printer and lots of accessories. While at the assessment I expressed my needs, and they explained what was available, and even though I said I did not certain things, they come as standard when they apply for computer kit, yet other things that would have been useful are not included. For example a printer, a lap-top bag, and a pen drive amongst other things are included even though I don’t want them. These are all items which cost the tax payers money, and if my needs had been listened to I wouldn’t have. Other items that would have been useful do not come with the standard pack. For example the laptop has a good speck, but only has one space for plugging in either a microphone or headphones, yet I am provided with dictation software, which is not really usable without both at the same time! This experience has just re-enforced what we have learnt at Uni, that listening to the service users needs is important, it doesn’t necessarily make it more expensive, but does make it better for the individual.
