Watching T.V last night I found myself shouting at the T.V as the presenter when talking about the dark ages sometimes talked about the formation as the English as a concept and sometimes the British. I know the Scottish get annoyed that when people mean British they often say English, but I found myself getting annoyed the other way round. When really the presenter was talking about the formation as the English as a concept, but kept saying British, I realised that it is no wonder that the English struggle to know who they are, they have no concept of their history as unique to the history of Britain. I guess I want to learn more about what makes the English, English. I want to know what is my English heritage and how that related to my British heritage. Until we learn to celebrate our different heritages as unique and adding to the big picture, we can’t move forward together.
