Only 355 shopping days to Christmas...

So, Christmas is officially over. I know, because this morning I was volunteered to take down the office's decorations. Now, I will admit that what follows was actually pointed out to me some time ago by my sister, but I think it's so accurate that I shared it with my colleagues this morning and they all agreed - so Tina, consider yourself a wise and astute observer of life...

The bottom line is, while there are a few other oddments which are mainly used to flog cards and stuff (e.g Valentine's Day, Mother's/Father's Day, Halloween etc), British shops generally adhere to a set pattern regarding what their displays consist of.

From December 26th until whichever weekend Easter falls on that particular year... It's Easter.
From the day after Easter until the day the schools break up for the summer holidays... It's Summer.
From the first day of the school holidays until the last day of the school holidays... It's Back To School (which, of course, is just what every pupil wants to see on the first day of their holidays, eh?).
From the day the schools go back in September until December 25th... It's Christmas.

So there you have it - every major event of the year stretched out to about six times longer than it needs to be, simply as an excuse to make us part with more of our money for longer. It's appalling commercialism, and I say we should take a stand against it. But first, I'm off to get a Cadbury's Creme Egg.
