So, the popular festive number, 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'. Lovely and heartwarming, eh? Or so you might think... but look a bit closer...

It all starts well, of course, with some carol singers turning up to wish one a merry Christmas, and for that matter, a happy New Year. Then they bring glad tidings not just to you, but to your kin as well. How touching. But then they turn nasty. "We all like figgy pudding... so bring some out here". Woah, back up a second - you've shown up UNINVITED at my house, and now you're DEMANDING that I bring you figgy pudding? What is this, some new form of protectionism? But it gets worse, as they then insist that they won't go until you provide that figgy pudding. So, they've invited themselves round for pudding, and are refusing to leave unless you satisfy their requests? How bloody rude!! What if you don't have any figgy pudding in the house at the time? Or worse, not enough for the number of carolers who've shown up? You can't just give figgy pudding to some of them - they ALL like it, after all. It's outrageous, and just typical of the terrible consumerism that's become so prevalent around Christmas these days. Appalling. I blame the parents.

*because she pointed this out to me in the first place, and now I'm taking all the credit for it.
