It's a tough dilemma. What if your weekly footy fix coincides with your Sunday service? Do you go and join the multitude of like-minded believers passionately bellowing out songs of praise and adoration, or go to church?
Yes, OK, so that was rather an obvious gag, but the more I think about it, I'm wondering if there really is that much of a difference between going to a match and going to church. Each week, the same devoted individuals turn out, sit in their regular pews, and ask for a miracle; many of them go away complaining about it all, saying that they could have done a better job, but they still come back the next week in the hope that it'll be a bit better this time.
Perhaps it's time for the church to take a look at what it is about football that creates such a huge stirring of passion and community spirit, and try to apply it to the traditional Sunday morning. Maybe services could be split into two halves; tea and coffee could be done during half time, along with pies? Oh, and you know those electronic boards they hold up when there's a substitution? Wouldn't they be perfect for displaying the hymn numbers? Then, after a quick chorus of "Who's the w****r in the black?", it's off outside for a huge fight with your local rival church's congregation. And there you have it: football isn't the new religion, religion is the new football.
And not a single lame "Jesus saves" gag or anything...
